Die Färberei exemplifies why I love Munich. It’s an enclave of urban culture, a great public resource, a nucleus of street-art activity, and totally hidden.
A one time textile dyeing plant, Die Färberei is located in the Rückgebaude of an apartment building and is a combination studio, gallery, shared work space and home to some of Munich’s young graffiti and street artists.
I spent last Saturday there with a couple of fellow Etsy members to take a Siebdruck class (silk screen). The class was taught by a young cool-guy named Leo. At first, Leo gave the impression that there were about sixteen million things he’d rather be doing than teaching a bunch of amateurs how to Siebdruck on a Saturday, but he warmed up and by the end of the course I concluded ol’ Leo was okay.
The class took the better part of a day. I knew the basics of how silk screen printing worked going into the class, but I didn’t realize just how involved it is (producing a film, preparing the screen, imprinting your image onto the screen, washing the emulsion away, preparing the frame, inking it and then finally printing…)
By the end of the day my fantasies of ‘running down to the silk screen place once week to whip out some cool prints’ had completely evaporated. It’s a lot of work. That’s not to say I won’t one day do a Siebdruck project, in fact once you take the class you are allowed to use the studio for a small fee, but thanks to the Färberei course, I know it’s going to be a big project.
It’s right across the road from the Schyrenbad. I was trying to find out if it’s in Au or Untergiesing, but I can’t find a map for that. In any case, it’s on the border of the two.
